Maine Fishing Guides & Luminaries

S2E5: Harvey Wheeler, the “Salmon Maven”

In the realm of fishing and the mastery of the art it requires, few are as legendary as HARVEY WHEELER, affectionately known as “The Maven.” For years, his name has been synonymous with Maine’s fishing community. He’s respected and cherished, not merely as a seasoned guide but as a genuine repository of fascinating stories that trace back to Maine’s fishing past.

Growing up on a farm in Portland, Maine, Harvey’s intrigue with fishing began with his early trolling experiences on Sebago Lake. His passion for the sport was ignited when he discovered a fly fishing rod in a shed. From then on, it was a journey of challenge, exploration, and pure joy. Harvey established himself as a deft Atlantic salmon fisherman. A love affair with bass fishing arose from Harvey’s desire to delve into remote fishing spots, leading to sublimely rare catches that would test the mettle of even the most seasoned fisherman.

Harvey transitioned into guiding, having obtained his Captain’s license and Maine Guide’s License. He was renowned for his incredible knack for guiding on both freshwater and saltwater. His professional ethics and genuine passion for guiding made him an excellent mentor, often earning him the highest praises in his dual roles as a guide and an instructor.

Reflecting on his life as a fishing guide and mentor, Harvey asserts that the people he has met along the way are more valuable than any catch. From collaborating with fellow guides and making lifelong friends to maintaining friendships with valued clients – every relationship is of the utmost importance to Harvey. For him, fishing is not a solitary sport; it is an activity best enjoyed in good company.

Throughout his lifetime, Harvey Wheeler has been more than just a fishing guide. He’s an ambassador of the sport, a cherished teacher, a mentor, and a friend to everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. His dedication to teaching, his enthusiastic love for fishing, and his genuine care for people truly embody the spirit of Maine’s fishing community. Today, we celebrate Harvey, not just for his ceaseless contributions to Maine fishing but for his unwavering love for the people he met along the way. For the Maven, it was, and will always be, about the people.
