Capt. Eric Wallace’s story begins in Michigan, where a childhood filled with steelhead, trout, smallmouth, and carp helped shape a lifelong connection to the water. From there, his path carried him through windsurfing, life on the road out of a converted van, and work in Oregon, Colorado, and the Florida Keys that eventually led him into professional guiding.
In this episode, Eric shares how those early adventures led to two-handed steelhead fishing, earning his captain’s license, and learning the tarpon and permit waters of the Florida Keys. He talks about what happened next, a coin flip that brought him to Maine, and how he began applying shallow-water flats techniques to the striped bass fishery in Casco Bay.
We talk about the patterns and tactics that define his approach. Eric also reflects on the realities of running a busy guide business, the gear and boats that have shaped his career, and the small innovations that help him stay effective on the water.
In this conversation, Eric shares what it means to build a life around fishing, travel, family, and his constant quest to learn new water.
