Michael is joined by Roger Lambert, Tenley Skolfield, and Mark Latti to talk about the Friends of Fly Rod Crosby.
This conversation centers on honoring Cornelia “Fly Rod” Crosby, Maine’s first registered guide, and the campaign to commission a life-size bronze statue in her likeness at the new Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife headquarters in Augusta. It’s a project rooted in legacy, recognition, and a desire to ensure her legacy continues to inspire future generations.
In this episode, Roger shares how Fly Rod Crosby’s roots in Phillips, Maine, and her pioneering role in guiding moved him to help “wave her flag” and bring broader awareness to her impact on Maine. Mark explains why IFW supports the effort and how the statue will welcome visitors at the entrance of the department’s first permanent headquarters along the Kennebec River. Tenley reflects on her own journey as a master Maine guide, her years operating a Guide Service and fishing lodge, and what it meant to become the first recipient of the Fly Rod Crosby Award for service.
Together, we explore Fly Rod’s influence as a writer, tourism promoter, and advocate for early conservation ideas, along with the thoughtful design of the statue, the attention to historical detail, and the work still ahead to bring the project across the finish line.
It comes with great pride to share a conversation about preserving one of Maine’s most important outdoor legacies.
