Maine Fishing Guides & Luminaries

S4E2: Paul Ostiguy, “The Man in the Big Land”

Paul Ostiguy is an experienced lodge owner and passionate angler whose love for remote waters has taken him deep into the wilds of Labrador and beyond. As the operator of several renowned lodges, Paul offers world-class opportunities to fish for large native brook trout, world record landlocked salmon, as well as magnificent Arctic Char and Sea Run Atlantic Salmon in some of the most breathtaking locations in the world.

In this episode, Paul shares what it takes to run a successful remote fishing lodge, from managing energy and supplies to facing the daily surprises that come with wildlife and weather in the remote wilderness of Northern Canada. He recounts memorable fishing stories, the unique characteristics of different rivers, and the ongoing improvements being made to enhance the guest experience on and off the water.

Outside of discussing the legendary McKenzie River Lodge we also talk about Paul’s other ventures, including operating the arctic char-focused Inukshuk Lodge and reopening the legendary Delay River Lodge for Atlantic salmon fishing. Beyond the rivers, Paul reflects on his leadership work with the Quebec Federation of Outfitters, and how his passion for this world ultimately led him to meet his life partner, Ann, through their shared work with tourism development in the region.
