Pat Keliher’s career in the fly fishing and conservation world is nothing short of remarkable. Beginning as a well-respected Maine Guide, Patrick built a reputation for his deep knowledge of the water and his passion for the sport. His guiding journey soon led him to the Coastal Conservation Association, where he played a crucial role in protecting striped bass populations, managing eel conservation, and supporting dam removal and habitat restoration projects.
Pat’s dedication to conservation took him even further when he was appointed to lead the Atlantic Salmon Commission, and eventually oversee all sea-run fisheries under the Maine Department of Marine Resources. Navigating the complexities of state government, he worked to balance conservation efforts with the interests of Maine’s fishing industries, including the challenges of protecting right whales while supporting Maine’s multi-million dollar lobster fishery.
Throughout his career, Pat has remained deeply connected to the fishing world, and in this conversation, Patrick shares stories from his early guiding days and the golden era of striped bass fishing on the Kennebec River. His expertise and passion continue to shape the future of conservation, ensuring that Maine’s waters remain abundant for generations to come.
