Rod McGarry is a Maine Flyfishing Luminary and a household name in the Maine Fly Casting Community. Rod has worked as a flycasting professional since 1991.
Rod was raised in Rhode Island; his father was a police officer and his mother was a school teacher. Rod is a graduate of Brown University and was a decorated hockey goalie.
In his professional career, Rod worked in the Life Insurance Industry in Providence, Rhode Island, Andover, Massachusetts, and Chicago, Illinois. It was through this work that he gained an interest in public speaking and used those skills to perfect his evolving interest through coaching and mentoring.
Following his retirement in 2000, Rod came to Maine, living in the Back Cove neighborhood of Portland with his wife, Priscilla. He was immediately recruited by LL Bean and the Outdoor Discovery School to work hand in hand with Macauley Lord teaching Fly Casting at all levels for the company. Rod was a familiar voice, offering advice and credibility for customers that would call in on the LL Bean Fly Fishing Hotline.
Rod has an innate ability to captivate an audience and is one of the most engaging conversationalists I have ever encountered. Rod has a unique ability to prepare his presentations through careful research, and always offers his audience an engaging dialogue that is fun to participate in.
Rod has the ability to look clearly at his students and make his students walk away feeling talented and skilled, bearing high confidence and self-esteem.
Rod has earned his way up the ranks of the Federation of Fly Fishers, starting as a Basic Fly Casting Instructor, later testing and passing his Master Fly Casting Certification, and eventually receiving the Prestigious Mentoring Award from the Federation of Fly Fishers Casting Board of Governors. In 2009 Rod was awarded The Hanger Memorial Life Award, which recognized him for his noteworthy contribution to enhancing fly fishing through instruction and education.
